![]() This is definitely the best camera installed on an iPhone. If I’m being picky, I’d say all the digital jiggery-pokery can make iPhone XS photos look a wee bit fake, but this will depend on your taste. You can now apply this after taking a photo, rather than having to select portrait mode before you take a pic. I am also a fan of the new portrait mode setting, which uses a technique to ‘bokeh’ to artily blur the background. This is great for taking motion pictures as well as anything which requires a high level of detail or a scene which has complex contrasts between light and shade.Īpple’s chip can perform a massive five trillion operations per second, meaning this very complex process happens without you knowing it’s happening. It uses the A12 Bionic chip’s ‘Neural Engine’ to apply artificial intelligence to your photos, meaning that several snaps are taken every time you click the shutter which are then automatically combined to give one superb shot. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, discusses how the XS camera takes several different shots at once and combines them (Photo: AP)Īpple has been working hard on the dual-lens camera on the XS, which now features faster sensors and ‘advanced algorithms’ which will make your photos look better automatically. Once you go big, you may never look back. It’s great for watching YouTube and movies (although I’m not convinced small devices are well suited for films) and using it for only a short space of time made older models look weedy and tiny by comparison when I returned to using them. The iPhone XS Max has brought changes to my life.ĭespite this minor grumble though, I loved the extra screen space offered by the beefed-up handset. In turn, having my iPhone in a bag meant I could no longer perform the tripartite pocket pat which allows me to swiftly check I haven’t lost my keys, wallet and phone. This meant I had to store it in my backpack, which immediately made me feel that muggers would someone know exactly what I was doing and make off with my bag and its expensive contents. Form factor? No.īut I was a bit sad to find that it was actually too big for my trouser pocket and poked out a bit at the top. These bizarre narratives that spring up around tech launches, specifically Apple ones, are very strange sometimes. Music sounds better on the iPhone XS Max than any other device I’ve used – and it’s so expensive that back-of-the-bus kids are unlikely to get one and use it to torment commuters. I also liked the stereo speakers fitted into the XS, which gave a wider and loud sound that reminded me of the iPad Pro’s rich tones. I found the iPhone XS Max’s screen to be bold and bright, with beautiful rich colours which made photos look great. The graphics really are impressive on this soon-to-be-released title, suggesting gamers will be very pleased as developers begin to grapple with the power of the new chip.Īpple claims the devices’ OLED screens are the ‘sharpest displays, with the highest pixel density, on any Apple device’ with ‘the best colour accuracy in the industry’. Video 4K video recording at 24, 30 and 60 frames per secondĭuring the unveiling of the XS, Apple showed off the power of the A12 Bionic with a new game called The Elder Scrolls: Blades, which features astonishing ‘console quality graphics’ which immerse players in the mythical world of Tamriel.Dual 12 megapixel telephoto and wide-angle rear cameras, 7-megapixel front-facing camera.Portrait mode selfies with Bokeh effect (background blur).4K video recording at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second.Dual 12 megapixel telephoto and wide-angle rear cameras. It has roughly the same dimensions as the iPhone 8 Plus but has a much larger screen.Īll the new devices incorporate Face ID, a clever system that unlocks the device by scanning its owner’s face, as well as the new A12 Bionic chip, which is 15% more powerful than previous chips, with 50% faster graphics performance and reduced power usage which means it uses roughly half as much juice as earlier versions. The smaller model has the same dimensions as the 5.8 inch iPhone X (which had Apple’s biggest ever screen when it was released last year) whilst the Max has a seam-busting 6.5-inch display. Apple’s naming conventions have become a little confusing of late, so you may be forgiven for being a little bewildered about all the different models. So from here on in, when I talk about the XS I’m referring to the capabilities both devices and will try to make it clear when I’m discussing features to the Max. The XS and its heftier sibling are more or less the same device but differ in the size of their screens. ![]() This year, Apple released three new phones: the iPhone XS and XS Max as well as the XR, a cheaper model which still incorporates a lot of the technology found in the pricier iGizmos.
